1858 Large Date 5-cents ICCS Certified F-12
Large Date Variety: When the decision was made to increase the font size of the date on the Province of Canada 5-cents from small to large, and so as to not cause the small date working dies to become obsolete, a large date four numeral gang punch was produced to overstamp the remaining small date working dies. With a new large date, this produced three large over small date varieties.
Victoria Portrait Obverse 1:
Strand of Hair Detail: Just to the right of the Queen s eye is a thick, truncated strand with two very thin strands rising to the brow.
Eye Detail: The upper eyelid is thin with little definition towards the corner of the eye. The lower lid loses definition approaching the corner.
Lips and Chin Detail: Protruding upper lip with a pronounced curl. The chin is round and smooth to the neck.
